On Thursday 6 June, it was the date of the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The Ministry of Defence and the Royal British Legion hosted the UK's national commemorative event at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer, France.
Veterans and world dignitaries gathered to commemorate the assault on five code-named beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.
Despite D-Day being a resounding success, the loss of life was staggering. For all the men and women who took part in this operation I salute you and thank you for my freedom. Certa Cito.
